Technology and Standards: What to Plug In With in Spain

When charging an electric vehicle in Spain, you'll encounter a standardized and future-proof set of connectors, fully aligned with the rest of Western Europe. For AC charging (slow and fast), the Type 2 (Mennekes) connector is the universal standard for all cars and public charging points.

For DC rapid charging, the CCS Combo 2 (CCS2) is the dominant and mandatory standard for all new installations. The older CHAdeMO standard, popular with Japanese brands, is becoming less common and is typically only found on older or dual-cable charging units. If you drive a Tesla, the Supercharger network uses a proprietary connector, but most newer Supercharger stations are also equipped with a CCS2 cable for non-Tesla vehicles, following the company's open-charging policy in Europe.
